Birth control refers to the attempt of men and women to stop pregnancy. There are quite a number of birth control methods currently available with some able of preventing STDs while others do not. One of such birth control method is birth control shot, also called Depo-Provera. This is a birth control method designed for women and it normally injected into the woman’s body and one shot can protect the woman from being pregnant for 14 weeks, thus to be fully protected, the shot should be give once in every twelve weeks for total pregnancy prevention. It works in a similar version as progesterone hormone.

Depo-Provera begins to work immediately or after five days if it was given during menstrual cycle. This birth control shot is quite effective and can control pregnancy for up to 99%. It can be used by most women though those who suffer from breast cancer, a liver disease, vaginal bleedings that are unexplainable and blood clots should not use it.

For those who have used or are using Depo-Provera, there are quite a number of side effects that they are likely to experience. Some of the notorious ones include menstrual cycles being irregular or missing completely, being nervous, depressed and dizzy, and experiencing some changes in weigh as well as appetite. Headaches become common too. In addition to that, some women will develop acne; grow some facial hairs as well as body hairs or hair losses. Most of these side effects are rare. The most common one is the irregular menstrual cycles which affects up to 50% of the women after using birth control short for over a year stop having menstrual cycles. Spotting and bleeding that is irregular is another common side effect that many women experience.

Besides the above mentioned side effects, prolonged use, normally over two years is going to make you have bones of low density. This is likely to cause osteoporosis. One good thing about this method of birth control is that once you stop using Depo-Provera, you could conceive within three to four months after the last shot has been administered. However, some people may take up to a year before they can conceive again and this is depended on the duration you have used it.

Some of the advantages associated with Depo-Provera include the fact that it is highly effective, it is cheaper than pills, it does not affect your sexual activity, and you don’t have to take it daily like pills since it has long term protection. On the other hand, it causes the side effects we have seen above, such as irregular menstrual cycles or absence of these periods, it does not protect you from STDs, it requires constant visits to a doctor and it requires you to stop using it many months ahead of your decision to conceive.
